The video art exhibition DOWN STAIRS, UP STAIRS uses
stairs as a main object, symbolizing going down and
going up. Classically defined as series of steps, stairs
as an object are static in themselves. However, stairs
facilitate change, movement and continuation. How to
specify the stairs directionality of upward or downward,
left stairs or right stairs? When the mobility on the
stairs is a temporary category the immobility
facilitated by the stairs themselves is obscure. Stairs
contain a priori: They are the prerequisite to the
bipolar contradiction of reverses, such as to separate
and to merge - spaces, floors, levels, layers,
distances, worlds. Similar to the function of the
bridge, with the trivial or usual presumption of
certainty in function of ascending or descending, the
actions performed on the stairs are not immediately
obvious.
The DOWN STAIRS, UP STAIRS video-selection represents a
snapshot of a diverse spectrum of direct and metaphoric
meanings of “going down stairs” and “going up stairs”
with various possibilities for interpretation through
the medium of video art. Some of the presented videos
are centered into artist’s discussion with elements of
criticism, concerning the analogical down stairs and up
stairs contradictions, such as success and failure,
gradation and degradation, proud and shame. Other videos
simply supply playful visual narrative and poetry of
certain physical or material movements or transitions by
the means of going up and going down in parallel to the
routine of their changes.
With the allegation from the advertisement campaign of
‘Crookedbrains’ for usage of the stairs in a creative
way “Staircase: Who says these are just for going up and
going down?” the project DOWN STAIRS, UP STAIRS also set
the issues about the suspicious functions of some
important staircase at
Gyeonggi Creation Center space.
